In A Life Beyond Reason: A Father’s Memoir (Beacon Press), UNF English Professor Chris Gabbard (Stanford PhD 1999) tells the story of the life and death of his son August, born with H.I.E. (likely due to medical error) in a San Francisco hospital. August survived for 14 years. This unflinching and luminous memoir explores a father's philosophical transformation when he must reconsider the question “what makes a life worth living?” It is also a father-son love story. Dr. Gabbard discusses the difficulty of raising a disabled child in Florida with its long Medicaid waiver waitlist. Kirkus Reviews write of A Life Beyond Reason: “Parents and caregivers will find plenty of inspiration in these moving, empathetic pages.”
